Looking for Little Egypt by Donna Barbrick Carlton |
This
book explores the not-so-innocent era of ballyhoo, sideshows, and
hoochy coochy, as well as the myths surrounding the infamous exotic
dancer, Little Egypt. The search for the original notorious Little
Egypt begins with the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and moves to New York
in 1897, when she played to packed houses on Broadway. "Oriental"
dances at the 1893 fair, and shows how scandal propelled imitation
versions in sideshows and burlesque houses are described in detail.
Also, investagates Anthony Comstock, the country's most powerful
censor, attempts to shut down the shows--only to create greater
publicity and demand. Published by IDD Books, 104 pages, approximately
100 illustrations. Includes notes, bibliography and index. "A fascinating book . . ."--Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine
". . . (A)n important book on this fascinating and
shadowy figure from dance history. It's an indispensable source for those
interested in ways popular culture and dance intermingle. It's also a colorful
and lively story--as exotic and intoxicating as a tale out of The Arabian
Nights."--Dance and the The Arts Magazine |
